In Vienna, Christmas market breaks are nothing if not charming, and this old-style affair lays it on thick. 1. Neigh need for taxis
Take a trip back in time to the rise of the horse-drawn carriage during the 1860s. Trade in four wheels for four legs as you take in the city centre sights from a whole new prospective! Today, the carriage is known as a 'Fiaker' and can be regularly spotted around the streets of Vienna.
2. Classical concerts and opera
Hit a high note by attending events at strikingly beautiful locations across Vienna. From orchestras to jazz, opera to theatre, there’s something to appeal to all. Marvel at the architecture as you enjoy world-famous performances from the comfort of your show hall seat.
3. Sweet treats
Vienna’s Christmas markets are the place to be for sweet festive treats. Indulge in the huge gingerbread hearts on offer at market stalls – you can even have a message written in icing – mulled wine (glühwein), roasted chestnuts and brandy-infused coffee. Vienna’s also home to apple strudel and the world-famous sachertorte, a rich chocolate cake filled with apricot jam.
4. Big wheel (Wiener Riesenrad)
See Vienna from a height both day and night with the giant Ferris wheel. Pick out famous landmarks from the skyline as you slowly rotate around. If you have something special to celebrate, you could always splash out on your own private wagon before tucking into champagne and a three-course meal.
5. Magnificent sights
During winter, Vienna can be pretty chilly and often blanketed in a sparkling layer of snow. Take a break from the bracing weather by visiting the Kunsthistorisches Museum – it has a huge number of masterpieces spanning several centuries. Directly opposite, the Natural History Museum is worth a visit too.
6. Spiritual wonders
You’ll find some ornate churches and cathedrals in Vienna, and they become even more atmospheric at Christmas. Visit the Votive Church to see its towering spires and decorative altar. St. Stephen’s Cathedral dates back to the 12th century and has a unique multicoloured roof.
