From 1-23 December, you can witness the opening of the advent gate at Targ Węglowy at 6pm daily. It’s towards the south end of the markets, near the Golden Gate, so you can pop by for the ceremonial opening before or after exploring the stalls.

Climb to the top of St Mary’s Church for spectacular views across the city. Spot the Christmas tree, many of the markets and all the landmarks in the skyline. It’s definitely worth the 400 steps up there!
2. Find Neptune's Fountain
When the streets are sprinkled with snow, this emblem of the city looks even more dazzling. There are often street performers and musicians right beside it – even on the coldest of nights!
3. Warm up with a cup of grzaniec
A steamy cup of this traditional Polish drink is sure to warm your heart on those chilly days. This mulled tipple combines red wine, spices like cloves and cinnamon, and sometimes honey or fruit, to create a really comforting flavour combination.
4. Ride the AmberSky Ferris wheel
Enjoy a 15-minute ride in an enclosed cabin on this festive Ferris wheel and take in panoramic views across the city. On Granary Island, you’ve got the best spot to see the streets lit up in all their Christmas glory.
5. Check out the museums
Step back in time to uncover Gdansk's rich history. From the National Maritime Museum to the Museum of the Second World War, each houses fascinating artefacts and preserves and shares the city’s important heritage.
6. Stroll along the Motława river
Wrap up warm and head for a wander along the riverside, stopping off for a bite to eat in one of the charming waterfront cafés. Morning or night, the unique and colourful buildings look stunning against the water’s edge.
