Montenegro is something of a looker. Its coastline is a patchwork of golden and volcanic grey beaches sloping into clear blue seas. Away from the water, the sand gives way to pine-cloaked mountains and fields carpeted with flowers. Get out and about among nature for more great photo opportunities.
The country comes with more than its fair share of beaches. Budva alone has 35km of sandy shores to its name, many of which are backed by buzzing seafront bars. The Adriatic waters are warm and calm, making them perfect for families with young children. Many of the stretches of sand are laid-back and peaceful.
When you aren’t sauntering around upmarket Porto Montenegro, getting glitzy in Tivat and Kotor or tracing Lake Skadar on a long walk, how about heading back the way you came to experience Croatia? That’s the beauty of flying into Dubrovnik – it’s close enough to go back to if you want to explore both places.
Budva’s a haven for history buffs and sun worshippers, boasting a charming old town as well as a host of sandy beaches.
A classy, chilled-out beach resort on the Adriatic, Becici is also handy for spectacular scenery and the lively town of Budva.
Swaying boats, swishing palm trees and a towering mountainous backdrop… welcome to the heavenly resort of Herceg Novi.
Budva is the main draw for beachfront spoils. Take your pick from the lively and bar-lined stretches, or maybe a laid-back belt of sand for a relaxing escape. Peaceful bays surrounded by pines come as standard here, while windsurfing and paragliding add a bit of excitement to any tanning spot.
See all beaches (7)In Budva’s old town, elegant Venetian houses sit back to back with belfry churches and shady piazzas. If you’re keen on nature, you won’t want to miss a trip to nearby Durmitor National Park, where you can hike through idyllic pastureland or raft along the gulf-like Tara Canyon.
See all sights (10)One towering black mountain and a wowing national park makes Montenegro an instant winner with adventure seekers. It’s easily accessible, though the winding road from Kotor is a particularly breathtaking way of getting there. The woodland trails make for fantastic mountain biking or hiking expeditions too, while rafting’s also on the active agenda.
See all activities (12)Italian staples like pizza and pasta make it on to most menus in Montenegro, but you’ll find upmarket big-name brands like Nobu round here too. For authentic local cuisine, bag a table in one of the traditional restaurants – known locally as konobas – and feast on rustic delights such as grilled kebabs, goulash and cabbage leaves stuffed with mincemeat. They’re real treats.
See all eating and drinking (1)Each town comes with its own open-air market, where you can buy everything from souvenirs to fresh picnic supplies. Local lacework, weaves and woodcarvings are all worth keeping an eye out for. And the olive oil is probably the most luscious you’ll ever taste, so grab a bottle to take home.
See all shopping (1)Budva is known as the Montenegrin Miami for its glitzy after-hours scene. The harbour road is dotted with cool bars and nightclubs where you can catch international DJs in the summer, and enjoy the cool breeze as you sip your favourite drinks. Swanky clubs grace these parts, so don’t miss a trick.
