The fairytale Danish capital is calling this winter. So, come and celebrate the season Scandi-style with our Copenhagen Christmas market city breaks. With so many festive-filled wonderlands to choose from, the star-studded activities are endless. Visit Santa Claus at Tivoli Gardens, then how about spending your afternoon browsing the whimsical stalls and drinking mulled wine along Nyhavn Harbour? There’s nothing quite like Copenhagen at Christmas, so come and experience it in all its jolly glory for yourself.
Nestled between the fascinating districts of Nyhavn and Strøget, the Kongens Nytorv Christmas Market is a traditional treasure that’s not to be missed. The brightly-lit stalls, ribbon-wreathed walkways and snow-dusted spruces come together to make a real winter wonderland. As far as Danish Christmas markets go, it’s a quintessential example.
What better setting to host a magical Christmas market than on the renowned Nyhavn harbour? At this time of year, the waterfront is transformed into a twinkling backdrop for the bustling market. The multicoloured houses and moored boats are all lit by the glow of the stalls and the fairy lights strung above, making for an enchanting look.
Over the festive period, the famous Tivoli Gardens are dotted with glistening baubles, sparkling tinsel and glowing stalls. As you explore the range of foods, drinks and gifts on offer, watch out for the Tivoli Youth Guards. These youngsters put on a fantastic parade in their traditional festive red uniforms.
Fancy something a little different? Head to Copenhagen’s hippy hotspot, Freetown Christiania. A far cry from the traditional setting, the market here offers a new take on the usual festivities so you can experience something completely unique.
Dedicated to the father of fairytales, the Hans Christian Andersen Christmas market is second to none when it comes to whimsical settings. Think time-honoured Danish delicacies, beautifully spiced wine and old-fashioned stalls, all bordered by some of the most elegant of Copenhagen’s iconic buildings.
Spread throughout the snug rooms and majestic halls of the impressive fortress, you can roam around the range of stalls at your own pace, discovering unique crafts as you go. An indoor market may not be the norm, but it’s the ideal place to explore if you prefer a cosier setting for your Christmas market experience.

Most Copenhagen Christmas markets usually open their doors in mid-November, often around the second or third week, and run right up until Christmas Eve or, in some cases, just after Boxing Day, typically by the 30th of December. Specific dates vary each year, so it's always best to check the official websites.
The most famous and undeniably spectacular is the Tivoli Gardens Christmas Market (which requires an entry fee). Other hugely popular ones include Nyhavn Christmas Market (picturesque canal setting), Højbro Plads Christmas Market (city centre, often with international stalls), and the market at Kongens Nytorv (often features a lovely ice rink).
You absolutely must try a few Danish delights! Look out for gløgg (a potent, spiced mulled wine, often with raisins and almonds), æbleskiver (fluffy, spherical pancake balls, usually served with jam and icing sugar), roasted almonds, flæskestegssandwich (pork roast sandwich), and various types of festive pastries and confectionery.
The stalls are brimming with unique finds! You'll discover hand-crafted Danish design items, ceramics, intricate wooden decorations, knitwear, amber jewellery, candles, traditional nisser (Christmas elves) and a variety of gourmet food products perfect for stocking fillers.
