On a hill above Lassi there is a memorial to the Italian soldiers who died at the hands of Nazi troops on Kefalonia in 1943. A total of 1315 were killed in battle, 3,000 were drowned and over 5000 were executed. This war crime became widely known through the film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.
