From working boats to luxury yachts, the harbour is the focal point of the seafront. Early morning, watch the local fisherfolk bring their catch ashore, or later go for a stroll as the sun goes down along the palm-fringed promenade. There’s a really classic feel to this port.
Much of the capital’s had a bit of a facelift in the last few decades, giving it a totally modern feel. But the typical Greek touches remain, and you can still notice the traditional way of life making it a family-friendly destination. The nightlife is one to tempt couples too.
Argostoli, Kefalonia
In the beating heart of Argostoli is the pleasant Vallianos Square, named after the local shipping magnate and benefactor Panagis Vallianos. There’s a statue of him at the top end, which is where locals come to mingle with friends and visitors in the many cafés and restaurants. Dining here offers a real slice of Greek village life.
Argostoli, Kefalonia
The lagoon at the head of Argostoli Bay is a nature reserve and a lovely place to hang out and escape the hustle and bustle. You can hire a small boat or pedalo and take in the beauty of the lagoon at your leisure – you might spot the native Caretta Caretta sea turtles if you’re lucky. Or simply stroll around the lagoon and spot all kinds of birds that gather in this peaceful place.
Argostoli, Kefalonia
These lovely, tranquil gardens have been cultivated on the site of a neglected olive grove. They’re designed to preserve and display the different types of native flora of Kefalonia. It’s set just two kilometres outside Argostoli, and is open from 10am to 2pm and 6pm to 8pm (arrive half an hour before closing).
