The Byzantine Gardiki castle is the only surviving medieval fortress on the southern part of Corfu, one of three castles which defended the island. Although now in ruins the fortress walls, which form an octagon with eight towers decorated with rows of tiles, are still standing and in one tower are signs of a chapel.
