Get ready to pick up some goodies at the weekly market! From handicrafts and handmade lace to ceramics and clothing, you’ll find plenty of bits and bobs here. And the best bit? The prices won’t break the bank. There are fresh food stalls here too.
Aside from shops, you’ll find an open-air archaeological museum, a stunning octagonal church and a handful of tasty restaurants serving Portuguese cuisine – including one with a Michelin star! You could even venture further out to the ruined remains of the Faria Hill Fort and Castle.
Barcelos, Costa Verde
Igreja Bom Jesus da Cruz, an octagonal church is a real gem. Inside are decorated displays, dazzling chandeliers and intricate tiles. Every May, the Festa das Cruzes is held here, celebrating a miraculous vision that took place long ago. It’s highlight in the town’s calendar!
Barcelos, Costa Verde
If you want to uncover the history of Barcelos, this open-air archaeological museum is the place to come. Among its treasures are artefacts dating all the way back to the Roman era. Its most famous exhibit is probably Cruzeiro do Senhor do Galo, a cross commemorating the legend of the Barcelos rooster.
