There’s something really authentic about Lakithra. Most businesses are family-run, from the tavernas serving up tasty Kefalonian delicacies to the traditional Greek food shops selling all the best pastries and goodies. There are more locals than tourists too, making it the perfect place for a peaceful break.
There’s plenty to see and do within easy reach of Lakithra. Lassi, with its two white sand beaches, is just ten minutes away, so you’ll be sorted if you’re looking for more seafront ground to cover. The capital, Argostoli, is also just a stone’s throw away – expect museums and a bustling square.
Lakithra, Kefalonia
If I am a poet, I owe it to the air of Greece,' reads the plaque at Lorn Byron’s rock. The great writer travelled to Kefalonia in 1823 and this monument stands near the site of his former home in Metaxa. The stunning views from this vantage point are thought to have inspired much of the poet’s work.
Kefalonia
This pretty harbour village surrounded by pebbly beaches has an atmosphere of traditional Greek hospitality. It’s a popular stop off for sailing boats and there are some great waterside cafes and tavernas. You have to try the wood-fired bread from the local bakery. It is also home to a well-regarded diving school.
Kefalonia
The sprawling Venetian fortress in Assos was built in 16th century to protect the townspeople from pirates and Turks. You can take a walk up from the village through along a steep and winding track through olive trees to explore the fascinating ruins. Remember to take some water as there’s no café at the top.
