Take a stroll down streets of brightly-painted Venetian-style buildings and you’ll soon hit the quayside, with its small fleet of traditional fishing boats and glitzy yachts. You’ll find little beaches and fresh fish tavernas, which then light up at night alongside cafés and pretty houses, for a warm, cheery evening atmosphere.
Hire a car and set the satnav to Argostoli, where you’ll get to explore museums, the waterfront, and have a bite in the main square’s restaurants. See even more of the island on a beach-hopping boat trip, visit the picturesque village of Assos with its imposing castle ruins and soak up the stunning setting at Myrtos.
Kefalonia
This pretty harbour village surrounded by pebbly beaches has an atmosphere of traditional Greek hospitality. It’s a popular stop off for sailing boats and there are some great waterside cafes and tavernas. You have to try the wood-fired bread from the local bakery. It is also home to a well-regarded diving school.
Kefalonia
The sprawling Venetian fortress in Assos was built in 16th century to protect the townspeople from pirates and Turks. You can take a walk up from the village through along a steep and winding track through olive trees to explore the fascinating ruins. Remember to take some water as there’s no café at the top.
Kefalonia
The secluded, colourful, rustic village of Assos nestles in a horseshoe-shaped harbour out on a peninsula, overlooked by a Venetian fortress. It’s surrounded by dramatic coastal scenery and lush green hillsides, dotted with tavernas. Time seems to stand still here and you can easily lose yourself for a few hours.
