This charming Cretan city is known for its colourful Venetian harbour and maze of Old Town streets. Whether you visit day or night, you’re bound to be wowed by it. It’s only 35 minutes away, so you could either drive, get a taxi or hop on the local bus which passes through Almyrida every hour.
The two sandy beaches in this quiet resort have both been awarded Blue Flags which mean they’re perfect spots for swimming and sunbathing. The water just offshore is clear and shallow, so it’s great if you’ve got little ones who love to paddle. Further out to sea, you might see windsurfers making the most of the waves.

One of the oldest olive trees in the world – and a protected natural monument – is about 15 minutes from Kolymbari. It’s part of a mill and old villa, so there’s more to see than you’d think. The age of the tree hasn’t been determined, but the walls and stones of the mill date back to 1850.

Rides and slides for the whole family? Tick! Aqua Creta Limnoupolis Waterpark has everything you could want in an aquatic day out – a massive central pool, snack bars, lazy rivers, freefall rides, and plenty of water slides. If you’re feeling less adventurous, there are football fields and children’s playgrounds.

Brilliant Balos Beach looks like it was plucked straight from a postcard. We’re talking ice-white sand, turquoise sea and rugged headland combining to form a dreamy trio of sights. It’s set on the Gramvousa Peninsula and best reached by boat or car.
