With medieval buildings around every corner, Siena is a patchwork of burnt burgundy brickwork with some terracotta rooftops dotted about. Hang out in Piazza del Campo for a full view of your surroundings, and explore Siena Cathedral and Palazzo Pubblico. Torre del Mangia is an impressive tower, too.
Wild boar is often the hero of a main dish, served with thick ribbons of pappardelle. For starters or afters, cheese is a big favourite. Daring enough to try liver? The locals are big fans of it! If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you’ll enjoy panforte, a cake made of nuts and spices.
With Florence, Lucca and Pisa all a few hours away, you can experience even more of Tuscany. Check out cityscapes of grand domes, cycle around quaint streets, and snap a selfie by the Leaning Tower. But it gets better still – with so many lush vineyards around, wine tasting has never been so exciting.

All the bars on Piazzo del Campo have fantastic views of the square but Bar Il Palio is the one locals favour. The medieval square is the place to be, particularly at sunset. Soak up the ambiance while you relax with a coffee, a liqueur or a cocktail. What better way to end the day?

Basilica dell'Osservanza on the outskirts of Siena is one of the city’s most important religious buildings. The church has a high dome and a simple façade, and houses many fine artworks, like the Triptych by Sassetta and terracotta by Andrea della Robbia. You can see the church lit up at night from the city centre.

The Basilica of San Domenico is a vast brick church, founded by the Dominicans in 1125, with good views of the city. The church is closely linked to St Catherine of Siena, whose head is enshrined in a gilt case on the altar. There are also frescoes and art works including a portrait of St Catherine.
