Golden grains blanket Elounda Beach, with loungers lined up ready for you to relax. A little further out you’ll find two more beaches – peaceful Driros Beach and pebbly Plaka Beach. But you can mix sunbathing with sightseeing here. Venture to Spinalonga Island, a former leper colony. On a calm day, in the water between the islands, you can spot the ruins of the ancient city of Olous.
Elounda’s got a real vibe about it when the sun goes down. The harbour and neighbouring square is where you’ll be met by lively Greek tavernas and friendly bars. Enjoy the view of luxury yachts glinting in the water from one of the fresh seafood eateries. Afterwards, expect a tipple of local fiery raki.
Elounda, Crete (Heraklion Area)
Elounda can be found along the north-eastern coastline of Crete. The main beach is a well-presented 200-metre stretch of golden sands, laden with sun loungers and parasols and great views of Spinalonga Island out to sea. For a more peaceful spot, Driros Beach is a 15 minute walk away along the pretty coastal path.
Elounda, Crete (Heraklion Area)
Once a traditional fishing village, Elounda’s picturesque harbour attracts visitors from all over Crete. Follow the narrow streets towards the Venetian saltpans and the Kolokytha Peninsula, then relax along the harbour front that’s lined with restaurants and cafes; perfect for an afternoon drink watching the world go by.
Elounda, Crete (Heraklion Area)
Four kilometres away from Elounda lies the pretty suburb of Plaka. The beach is beautiful, with crystal clear waters and smooth white pebbles alluring holidaymakers to this peaceful hotspot. Many hotels and tavernas have sprung up over the years and there’s a little train that runs between Plaka and Elounda.
