It’s true – an astounding church completes the streets of Xewkiya. This knockout religious building typifies the grand architecture of Gozo, but it’s got a regal, slightly Italian look to it, too. The opulent domed church has a sweeping staircase entrance, but this isn’t the only part of town to admire…
Sitting within a pretty, unblemished valley, you’ll have plenty of views to drink in if you’re keen to explore. Meander around the landscape, or take a seat and rest on the plush hills. There are quaint nearby farmhouses and even Gozo Stadium on the outskirts! You can really set your own agenda.
Xewkija (Gozo), Malta and Gozo
Unbelievably, the Church of St John the Baptist was built by just 12 men. It did take 20 years though! Completed in the 1600s, the church has one of the largest unsupported domes in the world and can be seen from almost anywhere on the island. Inside, there's gold leaf, inlaid marble and great views form the roof.

Duke Shopping Mall in the heart of Gozo is a one-stop shop. You’ll find everything from branded clothing to homewares and a wellbeing centre. The Food Store has a delicatessen with all you’ll need to pack a delicious picnic if you’re planning a day out or you can eat in at the cafeteria.

Dwejra Tower was built in 1652 to defend the coast and was armed with cannons and guns. It was restored in 1999. It is open when the flag is flying and free to enter. The climb up to the tower is fairly steep, but the amazing views from the roof are worth it. There is a short video and a guide to answer questions.
