On the west side of the island, tucked into Santorini’s hinterland, you’ll find teeny Megalochori. Bright white buildings gleam under the sun, with contrasting doors and shutters painted in sapphire blue in a nod to the Aegean that laps Santorini. Come here for utter peace and relaxation.

This quaint village has a go-slow pace of life, where locals gather in the main square to play cards and traditional tavernas serve up classic dishes. Wander Megalochori’s cobbled passageways, passing a pretty bell tower and charming mansions, before heading to Avlogyros Traditional Tavern for an evening to remember.
Megalochori is one of the island’s chief wine producers so is the perfect place to sample local wine. Gavalas Winery has a rich history dating all the way back to the 19th century, while Venetsanos Winery is nestled in an incredible spot overlooking the port of Athinios, if you’re after a place to sip wine with a view.
