Between the standout Moorish tower and range of great local restaurants, you can enjoy a laid-back vibe in La Cala. Tuck into classic Spanish dishes, seafood platters and international delights. But if you want to experience superb shopping and glitzy bars, head to Fuengirola or Marbella.
The main showstoppers of the resort have to be the golf courses. Nearby, you’ll have La Cala, Santana, El Chaparral and Mijas to choose from, so grab your clubs and get ready to practise your swing. These are some of Andalucía’s finest, and immaculate La Cala has 18 holes carved into lush surroundings.
Costa del Sol
Once the capital of Islamic Spain, Cordoba is full of treasures and the grand arches of the Great Mosque is the jewel in the crown. Other highlights include Alcazar, a fortress built by the Christians, the Calahorra Fort, which guards the Roman Bridge and the ancient Jewish Synagogue, now a museum.
Costa del Sol
The dramatic, five-kilometre long Rock of Gibraltar stands tall off the Costa del Sol, featuring in many a sea view. A British overseas territory, it’s home to red pillar-boxes, English pubs, bookmakers and also a thriving population of wild Barbary macaque monkeys. Good for a day trip.
Costa del Sol
Revered for the Moorish Alhambra palace, Granada is a popular destination. Explore the narrow streets of the Albayzín and Realejo quarters. Visit the Capilla Real, where Spain’s notorious Catholic Monarchs are entombed, and the lavishly decorated Basilica of St John of God.
