Mesmerising Calheta has all the boxes ticked when it comes to ways to fill your days. Ochre sands, arty attractions and luscious levadas – so basically, it’s Madeira in resort form. One of the must-see sights is Quinta Pedagogica dos Prazeres, a quirky combo of a farm, gardens and an old cider press!
Santana might be on the opposite side of the island, but if you only visit one other resort during your Madeira holiday, make sure this is it. Off-the-scale charming and bursting with character, it’ll woo you with its wonderful triangle-shaped houses, known as Casas Típicas de Santana – they’re as twee as can be!

Bica de Cana is a fairly easy hiking route, known as 'the flower hike', thanks to colourful blooms you'll see. The route is carpeted with purple foxgloves, powder-pink orchids and plenty more besides. There's a waterfall here, too - dip your feet into the cool running water and drink in views across the north of the island.

As long as you have a head for heights you’ll love Gabo Girao. It’s the tallest sea cliff in Europe and second in the world. It rises, almost vertically, out of the sea to a height of 580 metres, offering fabulous views towards Funchal. The brave can venture onto a glass viewing platform that takes them right over the edge.
Madeira
Tucked away in a peaceful cove near the fishing village of Canical, this beach is quieter than other tourist spots and is one of the pretty pebble beaches on the island. There’s a café overlooking the beach where you can buy drinks and snacks, or rent deckchairs and parasols for a small charge.
