Meaning 'Point of the sun', Ponta do Sol is one of the sunniest spots on the island, and the perfect place to take it easy. Make the most of the never-ending rays with a glass or two of the local Atlantis rosé wine paired with a seafood platter on the seafront. You might find you'll stay there till sunset.
Thanks to wrap-around mountains, exploration’s definitely on the cards if you’re the adventure-seeking type. Head high into the forests to join one of the lush levada trails, and you can look forward to cascading waterfalls, twisting vineyards and pinch-me panoramas along the way.
Madeira
Bica de Cana is a fairly easy hiking route, known as 'the flower hike', thanks to colourful blooms you'll see. The route is carpeted with purple foxgloves, powder-pink orchids and plenty more besides. There's a waterfall here, too - dip your feet into the cool running water and drink in views across the north of the island.
Madeira
As long as you have a head for heights you’ll love Gabo Girao. It’s the tallest sea cliff in Europe and second in the world. It rises, almost vertically, out of the sea to a height of 580 metres, offering fabulous views towards Funchal. The brave can venture onto a glass viewing platform that takes them right over the edge.
Madeira
Tucked away in a peaceful cove near the fishing village of Canical, this beach is quieter than other tourist spots and is one of the pretty pebble beaches on the island. There’s a café overlooking the beach where you can buy drinks and snacks, or rent deckchairs and parasols for a small charge.
