There are two sides to Canico – the coastal resort, with its dramatic, rocky shoreline and, up in the hills, a traditional village. Here you’ll find twisting streets, a main square, botanical gardens and an 18th-century church. It’s linked to the coast by a steep, cobbled path.
Canico’s a great base for exploring Madeira’s magnificent countryside. Take a hike along the levada walking trails and drink in the lush landscape and rugged hills. You’ve also got a world of undersea life right on your doorstep at Madeira’s marine reserve, Reserva Natural Parcial do Garajau.
Canico, Madeira
A church built in 1783 and dedicated to patron Saints Lawrence and Anthony. The interior has some amazing white and gilded woodwork and there are paintings by Nicolau Ferreira to be enjoyed too. The bell tower is very impressive, as are the stained glass windows and royal coat of arms.
Canico, Madeira
Miradouro do Cristo Rei, or Christ the King, is an Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ on the cliffs in Garajau. The statue is a memorial to the non-Catholic Christians who were thrown from the cliffs in the days when only Catholics were allowed to be buried on the island. You can take a cable car down to the beach below.
Canico, Madeira
This quiet, pebble beach is known as a prime spot for scuba diving, but it’s also a lovely place to swim or soak up the rays. It’s set inside a nature reserve, down a cliffside from town. If you don’t want to walk down, you can ride the cable car.
