The soft, sandy shore and clear, warm sea of Praia do Carvoeiro is tempting for lazy days. Numerous coves and beaches nearby are also well worth exploring to find secluded spots, weird and wonderful rock formations, sea arches and caves. Boat trips around the almost-lunar landscape are also a must.
Live music really gets the atmosphere going in the main square, under the stars and by the sea! Take a seat in a welcoming, family-run restaurant and savour traditional Portuguese dishes or enjoy a day trip to the historic town of Silves. Its castle is a striking structure and the area is peppered with ruins.
Carvoeiro, Algarve
Algar Seco is a superb rock formation set in the waves. A wooden boardwalk links it to Carvoeiro centre which is great for wheelchair access and families with buggies. At sunset, the blowholes, arches and caves set into the limestone fill with colour and you are treated to a spectacular natural light show.
Carvoeiro, Algarve
The boat trips from Carvoeiro beach explore the coastline and grottos between Carvoeiro and Praia da Marinha. The turquoise-caves are almost magical and there are lots of tours to choose from, some with the option to stop and swim. If you choose to stay on the boat, the hour-long tour costs around €25.
Carvoeiro, Algarve
Treat the kids to a tour of Carvoeiro on the tourist train. It departs every 40 minutes from the square at the bottom of the hill for a 30-minute trip around the town, stopping at all the main resorts. On Tuesdays and Fridays there are tours to nearby Ferragudo, with a two hour stop to explore the village.
