If you’re looking for events, head to Piazza Grande, where locals come together with community spirit. There’s also the spa and many restaurants showcasing local pork, cheese and honey, so don’t miss out on experiencing the lot. Save time to explore nearby Pienza and Bagno Vignoni thermal village, too.
Edward and Bella fans: the Twilight movie, New Moon, was filmed here! Which isn’t all that surprising, given the town’s fantasy feel. But Montepulciano offers a little whimsy in August – get set for barrel-racing. This medieval tradition is still going today, so check it out!

When in Pistoia, all eyes are on its show-stopping cathedral. Stand and admire the series of striped arches decorating the façade before heading inside to scale the bell tower. The view from the top across the city, with the mountains as a backdrop, is truly breathtaking, especially at sunset.

Cavallino Matto amusement park has rides for all ages and levels of thrill-seeker, some with height and age restrictions. There’s everything from the carousel, log flume and flat rides to white-knuckle rollercoasters and free falls. The medium-sized park is shady and sells reasonably-priced refreshments.

If you’re around Cortona, take a detour over to this Franciscan hermitage – you won’t regret it. These old dwellings can be viewed from afar, and are currently lived in by seven friars who continue their religious practices. It’s a really peaceful place for a leisurely walk, too.
