The historical heart of Syracuse sits on the island of Ortigia. Although technically part of the mainland, it’s only connected to the rest of the city by two small bridges. With plenty of enchanting dining, drinking and shopping options on offer, it’s no wonder people come back to this part of Sicily year after year.

This staggering Greek theatre is located in the Neapolis Archaeological Park, hidden among glorious green trees and lots of natural vegetation. It was built around 470 BC and could hold up to 15,000 spectators! Take a seat on the ancient rock and imagine the performances that were once shown here. In the summer months, it often plays host to open-air music concerts and plays.

Enjoy time out from the city’s hustle and bustle at this serene natural pool with its fountain and freshwater spring. The water is half-filled with tall papyrus plants and there’s a balcony where you can stop and take it all in. Sip a fresh coffee and enjoy a spot of people-watching or look out onto the glittering Med and see the yachts nodding in the port.

Stroll through this unusually shaped cave and you’ll immediately notice its enchanting acoustics. Even the smallest of sounds can be amplified into a loud noise as they echo around the whole cavern. The cave received its name from the painter Caravaggio, who noted its similarity to a human ear.
